A lovely wadi, a waterfall almost all the year round!
Even when the water above is barely a trickle.
Ideal for the little ones,
as well as the macho ones.
But the smiles are assured for all – Mashallah!
But the wadi is not the only attraction in the area, although exploring the refreshing nooks and crannies carved by centuries of water flow makes for a lovely walk!
Above the waterfall area is a mature oasis, with an historical fort on top!
The oasis is majestic and it follows the course of the wadi, from which it receives irrigation.
Even after the end of summer, typically the driest period, water pools were abundant.
And the oasis flora was in full vigour.
The town mosque is especially attractive.
And the fort has very interesting remains.
Overall Wadi Hawqayn is a fantastic destination for a dip and a hike!
Best of all is that it’s within easy reach of a saloon car and the coastal highway – so no 4×4 is required!
This also makes it a very popular destination over holidays such as Eid with the local Omanis, who bring their joy at being out in nature, and their singing accompanied by drums and smokey fires for grilling help make Wadi Hawqayn a great destination for getting to know the Omanis and their culture.
The main waterfall is where the parking lot and stairs down are, indicated in the map below; so for a quieter evening camp, simply follow the wadi deeper into the mountains – there’s room for everyone!
