About

A freelance travel and motoring writer and photographer since 2004, living in UAE since 1999 (Al Ain!) Paolo Rossetti has published over 200 articles in The National, Gulf News, and Khaleej Times, as well as Arab Wheels, Middle East Car, Top Performance, and Wheels magazines. This love for cars and travel has taken him on an amazing journey of discovery in the UAE and Oman - and in this blog, Paolo wants to share his knowledge of great places to visit with you, just like numerous good buddies have shared their stories with him. Paolo is sad to hear of UAE expats (and nationals!) who spend their weekends bored in malls, when he knows there are awesome adventures to be had if only people knew where to go. Check out the photos and you will be astounded - is this really in the UAE? You betcha! On this website Paolo provides a lively travel article on a monthly basis, with description, photos, route, GPS file, and even a Google Earth map for you to follow at your leisure. It's free of charge because Paolo is not motivated by profits but by his admiration of the UAE and by helping you make the most of your stay in the UAE, be it a few months or a lifetime. To adventures!

Weekend Dining at Saigon Station, Silicon Oasis, Dubai

One of the restaurant characteristics of highest value is authenticity.

Because with authenticity comes sincerity.

And it is a mistake to equate good food with expensive prices – in fact, you will probably agree the most delicious food in your life is actually from home: made with the hands of your loved ones.

Indeed, really good food is connected with sincerity, not high cost.

I feel Dubai sometimes needs this reminder.

And so I’m proud to present to you what I would consider to be one of Dubai’s best restaurants – the humble but oh-so-delicious Saigon Station.

If you’ve been there, I’m pretty sure you’re now nodding your head in agreement; and if you’ve not eaten there yet, you’re in for a treat!

First of all, Saigon Station is run as a family operation – so they really care.

They care about each and every customer, and about each and every dish that they prepare.

That’s sincerity 101.

Secondly, Vietnamese cuisine is simply amazing!

South-East Asian in its freshness and exciting flavors, with French and Chinese influences – a culinary culture that is worth exploring in depth.

Actually, a visit to Saigon Station for lunch will have you thinking about booking a vacation to Vietnam!

Vietnamese hearty noodle soups are loved around the world, and for good reason – the famous Pho!

But they are also prepared dry, without the soup…

Salads and fresh or fried rolls also feature on Saigon Station’s menu – supremely delicious, and vibrant in flavors, they are a magnificent accompaniment to a main dish.

Above, the pomelo and shrimp salad offers a spicy and tangy jolt that contrasts so well with the rich noodle soup broth – which is also eaten together with a kind of fried dough, the Pho’s Companion, described as the doughnut stick (only 5 dirham!), you find yourself in dining heaven, eyes closed in ectasy, enjoying every bite!

And if you’re in doubt about what to order, and what dish complements what else – just ask.

Saigon Station staff are there to help you enjoy your experience of Vietnamese food – and the joy in their sincere smiles when you look on with surprise at the discovery of outstanding yumminess is precious.

Sure, you could pay 10x more, and go eat at a soul-less and familar restaurant – but I assure you that you’d be missing out.

Not only on a cultural culinary experience (unless, of course, if my reader is Vietnamese! And then he or she knows exactly what I’m trying to say!) but also that authenticity and sincerity in wanting to please a hungry visitor, with genuine hospitality carried forward to Dubai from the Vietnamese civilization, which actually heralds all the way back to the Neolithic period, over 4,000 years ago!

And then there’s the coffee!!!
